Stanway Viaduct
viaduct south
The view looking back towards Toddington. Stanway viaduct is an impressive structure. It has 15 arches, is 210 yards long and is about 50 ft high. Work should commence soon on the brickwork.
viaduct side
As you can see the viaduct is on a curve. Although it needs some weed removal, the overall condition is very good. A recent inspection confirmed that it presents no financial hurdle to the railway to bring it back into use - despite earlier fears. Sadly 4 workmen were killed during its contruction on 13th Nov 1903 when arches 7 - 10 fell down. The wooden supports had probably been removed too quickly.
arches
An unusual shot through the central piers. Shame about the tree getting in the way - I'll try again in the winter !
view
